Our tour to discover the hidden beauties of Filicudi Island starts from the Port of Filicudi, situated on the south-eastern side, corresponding to the namesake plain. Certainly, this one is not the most amazing zone of the island, but it constitutes the neuralgic centre of all its economic activities, and the place where all the services of touristic support are situated. On the coastal stretch, near to the pier, it is possible to visit and to enjoy the beauty of a beach, big enough to relax and to fully enjoy the crystalline sea which caresses the foreshore. Going along the suitable for vehicles streets, which from the port connect all the villages, we reach Mount Guardia, one of the most fashionable zones of Filicudi, a unique point where you can observe evocative landscapes of the “six sisters” and of the Sicilian coast. North of Mount Guardia, a crossroads leads to Rocca di Ciauli, a little village where small typical island’s houses are situated along a steep slope, surrounded by bushes of bougainvillea, jasmine, and hibiscus.

Now, going along the suitable for vehicles street again, in northerly direction, in a few minutes you arrive to Liscio village, situated under the slopes of Mount Terrione. From this point you can admire a wonderful landscape, raising upon the promontory of Capo Graziano and other islands, except Alicudi, covered with Fossa delle Felci. Once this village was inhabited by the richest Filicudians, and the refined houses constitute the evidence of that fact. From Liscio village we proceed in northern direction towards Valdichiesa, named after the twentieth century church of Saint Stefano still existing. The houses making part of this village have the same characteristics typical of the Aeolian agrarian villages. From the square of Valdichiesa, in nearly 40 minutes, it is possible to go through a path leading to Mount Palmieri; the village, because of logistic difficulties impeding its restoration, is still intact with its traditional houses decorated with colonnade and wide terraces. Behind Valdichiesa, on the slopes of Fossa delle Felci, there is Serro village, where few houses form a little but characteristic agricultural settlement. Our next tour is to discover the ghost village of Zucco Grande, of Vallone Fontanella and Case Ficcarisi. The path, of the length of around 2km, forks from Valdichiesa in the north-eastern direction, to lead then to Zucco Grande, an ancient prehistoric village, by this time forsaken since about a hundred years because of a strong migration movement, and wild nature which overwhelmed it. Once this zone had about 300 inhabitants and, according to some archaeological findings, was also a favourite zone of the Greek populations which settled there. From Zucco Grande a small path leads to Vallone Fontanella, called so because of a small spring of water, collocated in a cave which creates a very evocative landscape glimpse; here it is possible to refresh yourselves after long walks. From Zucco Grande village another mule track forks and allows you to reach Case Ficcarisi where to admire a luxuriant vegetation mostly compound of heather bushes, rockroses, strawberry trees, and wild roses.

This locality is named after the once existed small settlement. Moving some steps you arrive to the panoramic point, where you can admire the complex of islands surmounted by La Canna and Montenassari, and by gullies of Filo del Branco. Besides, in Ficcarisi, if you are lucky, you can observe the colony of Eleonora’s Falcon, wonderful birds which dominate the gullies of Filo del Branco. Once having explored the eastern side of the island, we now move towards the south-western side of Filicudi, to discover Montagnola, Pecorini and Stimpagnato. From Piana del Porto, the only suitable for vehicles street quickly leads to Pecorini. It is possible to reach the church dating back to the 17th century, and the house-museum of Jaques Basler, where we can admire an ancient millstone made of stone, and numerous tools. From Upper Pecorini it is possible to admire the view of the little fishermen village of marine Pecorini, where a very busy beach covered with pebbles is situated. This is the favourite place for the sailors, who during the high season, stop to taste the aperitif enjoying the non-stop nightlife. From marine Pecorini, in few minutes, a mule track leads to Stimpagnato and, after having crossed a typical village, you arrive through a staircase made of lava stone, to Montagnola.

Before you land upon the island you understand why, because of the pristine landscape and the particular scenery, Alicudi is one of those places where time seems to be stopped. The island, with its particular atmosphere, seems to tell its history, a history made of raids and invasions, a history which saw the succession of different populations, the history with the final result of peace and beauty of the place. Alicudi is a little paradise, a place where man and nature coexist without damaging each other.

Still today they move exclusively on foot along steep mule tracks which, from the port, cross the whole land till they reach the peak of the mountain constituting the island. Alicudi, because of its harsh morphology, has no paths or roads crossing its perimeter. The unique paths are situated on the eastern side, and connect houses and cultivable lands. The western side is totally uninhabited and nearly inaccessible; it is crossed by gullies and ancient flows which vertically cut the profile.

The mooring occurs at the new pier of Scalo Palumbo, which built in 1990, substituted the old pier which did not permit the landing of the boats of medium and large dimensions. The operations of landing occurred thanks to the marine technique called “rolling”. This technique consisted of reaching the port in a small boat with oars, which loaded persons and goods, in order to land.

Adjacent to the harbour area, which could be defined as the centre of the island, there are two groceries, the post office, some other shops of essential goods and the unique beach reachable on foot. Before you arrive to the island, you have to bring cash with you and eventual medicines which could be useful. The total lacking of automated banking, pharmacies and banks, no fashionable nightclubs, pubs, discoes; there is only one hotel and the only bistro bar, two groceries and the newsagent also selling essential goods. This is the fashion of Alicudi: to live on the essential, and the nature’s beauty, to live well with few things. Alicudi gives back all the flavour of an ancient itinerary, a journey full of mystery, a place which knew how to apply the respect for nature and popular traditions with the arrival of the tourism, even if small entities. While visiting the island it is better to place your trust in the guide of people who know the paths well, and remember to always bring with you a torch because the island is not illuminated. The unique plain road is the one that runs alongside the sea and leads to the pier. All the others are steep paths leading to 6 little built up areas, to cultivated zones and the Fossa Gerace, at the peak of the mountain.

Contrada Tonna

Situated on the western side of the island there is a little built up area of rural houses where you can admire the typical Aeolian architecture: staircases built with dry walls, in order to make the territory cultivable, and the ancient newspaper kiosks of Via Crucis, which attest the islanders’ devotion.

San Bartolo

San Bartolo is situated 330 metres away from the sea. It is about a road running alongside the church devoted to the patron saint of the Aeolians. It was rebuilt in 1821 upon the ruins of the seventeenth century sacristy. The small town is reachable going all over a paving road which starts from the port. Following the road which climbers up the mountain’s side you arrive to the church of Carmine, immersed into the Mediterranean scrub, which can be recognized for an usual bell tower, separate from the sacristy building.

Pianicello

In Pianicello zone , at altitude of 450 metres in the western part of the village, there is a little suburb, whose population’s mother tongue is German. It populates the island nearly the whole year.

Sgurbio

At the same altitude of San Bartolo, on the eastern side of the village, there is Sgurbio suburb, a small urban built up area compound of only 5 houses, and taking name after the 5 senses. The village situated on the eastern side is isolated, almost inaccessible via earth. This area is reachable, via earth, only thanks to a winding and long path; it is better to reach the village via sea.

Climbing the crater

Climbing the crater is like to climb over the Ferris wheel. The path you have to go through along the side of the mountain offers charming views upon the archipelago: in the foreground the Vulcanello peninsula, in front of it Lipari with Salina at the left, Filicudi in the distance ( during particularly clear days you can also see Alicudi), Panarea at the right, together with its islands, and Stromboli in the background. The walk is strenuous but natural wonders make the effort more pleasant. While climbing the smell of sulphur becomes stronger, but it is really suggestive to walk upon the reddish soil, rock’s characteristics which constitutes the volcanic mountain. It seem to walk on another planet, or maybe on the border of the ancient Hephaestus arms’ factory. The view from the peak is a good reward for the efforts that the climbing requires. Amazing and charming, the great chasm of Cratere della Fossa Coronata offers, as if it nearly were some special effects on the Shakespearean theatre stage, the sight of clouds made of boiling sulphuric vapours which, emerging from soil, colour the stone of yellow ochre and red colours.

Vulcanello

In Vulcanello it is possible to visit the Monsters’ Valley (Valle dei Mostri). It takes name after the suggestion created by an afternoon dim light, by post-sunset, which makes the forms created by the rocks enigmatic. The natural forms of the rocks remind the shapes of animals, monstrous figures, or wild animals.

Asino beach

You could never imagine it was possible to find this kind of a tropical corner in a volcanic island, a cove of black sand, so intimate and calm during the day, and so busy and fashionable at night. Such a suggestive place is able to mix one’s passion towards the green of the mountain, and the sea. It is the cradle of all the elements of nature: crystalline water of a pristine sea, warm air of fine seasons, the black soil and the faraway fire of volcanoes, producing quiet hissing sounds. This paradise is reachable by taxi boats, or walking down the steep slope on foot. It is possible to leave the scooter on the main road, to venture then between brooms and prickly pears. The beach is well equipped: there is a dancing platform on the shore, in order to enjoy the moonlight while listening to music in Arabian Nights’ atmosphere.

Thermal baths

The flow of the subsoil’s energy makes the area of the Volcano Island a special place, because of the presence of sulphuric zones in the offing, adjacent to the zone of hundreds-years-old island’s mud. The refreshing mud spurts out from subsoil, and is used for obtaining benefits for the skin, for bones’ or breathing diseases.

On the amazing island of Salina , in Santa Marina, you can admire the ruins of the Roman thermae, and some of the traces of the Bronze Age. The Civic Museum is not constituted of only one building; it is about three different buildings; each of them keeping different aspects of the history of Salina. The finds dating back to the Bronze Age of Portella , and the ruins of the Roman thermae are situated in Archaeological Museum. The Ethno-Anthropological Museum is situated in the house dating back to the first half of the 19th century. In the rooms of this has a typical background of that period is re-created.

The Emigration Museum of Malfa has a collection of documents, photos, and films, showing the causes of the migration phenomenon of the Aeolians’ inhabits at the end of the 19th century. Yellowed cloths, yellowed registers’ pages, where you can still read the names of the emigrants, and the photos of massive departures, tell us a sad page of the story, which unfortunately, is still today repeated: to leave your motherhood for searching luck in another place, which sometimes is only imaginary.

What to see at Panarea

Our journey to the island of Panarea begins with “San Pietro”, the main economic centre where the pier is, used for the landing of hydrofoils and ferries. A large number of narrow streets wind from the port area up to the three built-up areas of San Pietro on the east side, Drautto to the south-west and Ditella to the north-east. Due to the small size of the island you can visit it entirely on foot. Another possibility is to take the classic and picturesque aeolian taxi, the “Ape”( a little traditional three-wheeled vehicle) cleverly designed for the transport of passengers, or you can take the classic electric car too. The “Contrada of San Pietro” is the location of the main town centre and of the pier. It is also the centre of nearly all of the tourist related activities and of the island’s nightlife. The first surprise the island offers to visitors is a thermal spring next to the pier near “Punta Peppemaria”. The inhabitants and visitors enjoy the thermal spring and its therapeutic effects. Hot water (50°C/122°F) gushes from under the sea-bed. Walking through the narrow street that leads to the mountain the visitor will find himself surrounded by the built-up area of the “Contrada”. We recommend that you not only walk through the main streets but through the small paths too; they will surprise you with breath-taking shots of the landscape. The residential area is built along a gentle slope with artificial terraces that were used for agricultural purposes, its buildings still have an intact architecture with a typical white colour in contrast with the greens of the palm trees, of the olive trees and of the caper bush/flinders rose together with the ever-changing colours of the bouganvilleas, a plant widespread over the Aeolian Archipelago. Walking through the higher road you’ll find the small church of Saint Peter, the main religious building of the area and starting point of the procession of the patron Saint of the island and the fisherman beginning between the 28th or the 29th of June. The procession, after going through Panarea’s streets, continues by boat and ends in the evening with a classic firework display. The church, built towards the end of the XIX century but consecrated years after, testifies the devotion of its people to their patron Saint. To him was entrusted the hope of a peaceful life and of an abundant catch. It was this devotion that moved the inhabitants towards the building of a suitable location to be used to carry out the usual religious activities and which could hold a bigger number of believers, because in those years the population of Panarea reached the 1000 .Among the streets that form the area of San Pietro, almost hidden, there is the branch of Lipari’s “Bernabò Brea” museum, set up in two areas previously used as a storage room and a tank area. The museum exhibits historic and geologic remains dating back to the Neolithic and the mid-Bronze Age, almost all found in the prehistoric village Capo Milazzaese, the Calcara and Piano Quartara.
From San Peter’s church, through the panoramic route towards south, you reach Drautto, where a handful of houses stretch along the coast. The area takes the name from the Arabian Turkish pirate Draught, who chose the island as a haven for the mooring of his own ships. Walking south of the inhabited area, after having gone beyond a rocky promontory you reach the popular beach called “Caletta degli Zimmari”,where it’s possible to lie down on its soft sand and dive into the crystal and fresh waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Going on the same direction you reach Punta Milazzese, location of a prehistoric village where nowadays you can still see the ruins of the 23 huts that formed the settlement. From here, an old path takes you to Cala Junco, perhaps used as a dock for the village in the prehistoric times. This amphitheatre-shaped bay is surrounded by bizarre rock formations that create a natural swimming pool. This bay is considered one of the most beautiful not just of the island but of the entire archipelago because of the amazing colours of the water lapping against the shore that goes from emerald green to deep blue, via turquoise. During the summer, Cala Junco is very crowded but you still have the chance to enjoy the refreshing water and to relax in what can be called a heavenly corner.

After a brief stretch of road, connecting the harbour to the built-up area of San Pietro, and a turn on the right towards north, you reach Ditella. It’s a small area known for its hot springs and for the harmless fumaroles of Calcara beach, placed in a basin, that may be what’s left of a volcanic structure, which give an unusual view: the gases of the fumaroles come out from the soil making it hot, changing its colour and creating cracks in it.

What to see in Salina

The main slipway of the island is that of Santa Marina where a touristic port is also situated; on the south-western side, instead, there is the Rinella slipway. The whole island is connected by comfortable rotating roads, which intertwine along the slopes of the mountains, crossing lavic flows of amazing shapes. The best way to visit the island is surely to hire a scooter or a car, anyhow during the summer period an efficient bus service goes on till late evening.

The commune of Santa Marina rises upon the slopes of the Fossa delle Felci, where a huge crater covered with shrubby vegetation mainly composed of ferns, is visible.

As soon as you arrive to Santa Marina it is possible to admire the wonderful 18th – century church with its characteristic bell towers.

This zone is the most busy point of the whole island because full of small shops and locations, which in the evening become crowded for nocturnal amusement.

At the western side of the land, about 100 metres far from Santa Marina’s ring-road, in a locality of Serro dell’Acqua, it is possible to go through a path which leads, through olive and fruit trees vegetation, to Saracen caves, excavated from tuff, and hidden by dense vegetation, used as a refuge to escape from cruel barbarities committed by Saracens around 650 A. D.

The caves, fascinating for their morphologic structure, are composed by different communicating rooms, inside which, even today, cross cuts and a number of votive signs are visible. Moving down the road towards south, around 2 km away, you reach Lingua, a small village of fishers, so peculiar for its beach with pebbles, which reflects itself in crystal clear water. During your walk linger to admire, in Vallone Zappini locality, the 18th – century stone bridge, which was a part of the antique road.

Lingua extends along the north – eastern coast of the island. A terrace above the sea leads, through well-known for their good food locations, to a small lake of salty water separated from the sea by a thin strip of ground, once part of saline, from which the island took name. There are still visible some of the basins, dating back to the Greek period of the III b. C.

The place, headed by a picturesque light-house, is a natural reserve and represents an ideal place for the fans of bird watching who, during migration periods, can admire suggestive views.

From Santa Marina, Lingua fraction and Val di Chiesa, for the fans of trekking, in 2/3 hours, it is possible to reach the Fossa delle Felci, an old volcanic crater, from which you can admire all other islands, and even Etna.

The pretty village of Malfa, whose name probably derives from the Amalfitans emigrated during the 12th century, is situated on the northern coast of the island, in the valley between Monte Rivi and Monte Porri.

The dwellings, of characteristic white colour, are spread along a slope which slides towards the sea. At the village there are a small beach with pebbles of lavic boulders and a small port called Scario Galera, partially repaired and suitable for boats of small fishing.

In the main square there is the Saint Anna’s church, going back to the 18th century; inside it contains a number of paintings and sculptures: Natività della Vergine of 1742, Madonna del Rosario of the 11th century, Madonna della Guardia of the 20th century, the wooden sculpture representing the Holy Heart of 1925, the sculpture of Saint Anna with Madonna and Bambino of the 20th century, and the last sculpture with the effigy of San Giuseppe with Jesus. The adjacent zone is full of locations and small shops, the square’s floor is decorated with the wind rose, which refers to the link between these isles and the winds ruling them. The Pollara fraction rises from the rests of an antique crater partially collapsed, leaving as an evidence of its existence a stack which, from the sea, preserves millenary secrets. The village is situated around the Chiesa Patronale di Sant’Onofrio, built in 1853, where the statue of Immacolata of Sant’Onofrio, some of the paintings dedicated to Madonna, and the original floor, are kept. When Pollara is mentioned, it is hard not to link it to Massimo Troisi, who once fallen in love with those places, decided to set there some of the most suggestive scenes of his last film, Il Postino (The Postman), which gave a remarkable resonance to the extraordinary landscapes of Salina. The beach of Pollara, situated under the steep reef, shaped as an amphitheatre, with overhanging rock over the sea, is one of the most fascinating places of the whole Aeolians; at north there is the bay Balate closed by Perciato, a headland where stores and shelters, excavated in tuff, are visible. It is possible to reach the creek by a steep staircase which crosses the house of the Postman, where the namesake film was set. From this beach it is possible to admire the spectacular sunset, considered one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. The sun is of a wonderful intense red colour, and acts as a setting for amazing natural attractions, just think about a stack, an arch in the foreground, and about the beautiful islands of Alicudi and Filicudi, in the background.

The commune of Leni, called Lenoi by Greeks because of the containers where grapes was pressed, is situated between the two mountains and contains the fractions of Rinella and Val di Chiese, where the Santuario della Madonna del Terzito is located. This sanctuary arose from the ruins of a modest sacred building, realized by a hermit, who then placed an image representing the Virgin. In 1962 a farmer found an old painting of the Madonna among the ruins of the old building and, upon them a church was built. In the half of the 19th century the sanctuary underwent its first restoration, representing today the third church of the archipelago, and inside there is an 18th century canvas with the effigy of Madonna, depicted in the act of protection towards the isles, and a wooden statue representing Madonna with the same iconography of the antique painting found. Much more recent are the external modifications which brought to the creation of two bell towers, collocated at the sides of the Virgin’s statue, and to the amplification of the central nave.

The small village of the fishers, Rinella, is situated along a steep valley, which leads directly to the sea. Suggestive, unique and charming, this place represents one of the most characteristic places of the whole island, where it is possible to visit a wonderful beach of black sand, of a half-moon shape, surmounted by caves excavated in the rock, which were used as a shelter for boats.

The depths, low and sandy, are a paradise for the fans of snorkelling, who beyond the marine flora and fauna, can observe the volcanic activity consisting in phenomena called sconcquassi (upheavals), which are manifested with gas emanation and vapours from depths. In the village the second port of the island and a small port for boaters are situated.

Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Archipelago. It is the place of continuous discoveries, and you need time to enjoy all of its architectonical and natural wonders. Lipari offers every kind of attractions, it’s a perfect destination for families and young people, in search of nightlife. Moving by car, scooter or bicycle gives you more chances to reach places of charming beauty.

These are the places of interest to visit:

Chiesa della Madonna della Catena- Quattropani- Lipari

From the architectonic point of view the church does not present particular elements; its small and cozy space is basic and linear, and it is perfect both for silence and prays. La Chiesa di Quattropani is a little treasure, kept in one of the upper parts of the island, easily reachable from the port thanks to signposts, which simplify a way. It is strategically situated on the hill, in order to offer an amazing view.

The Norman Cloister

The Norman Cloister is an ancient and wonderful structure, an astounding find, showing the human’s genius; the strength of mighty stones which resists the passage of time. The cloister was the King’s Ruggero II wish. It is a part of the monastery, situated near the Saint Bartholomew Cathedral. The cloister was restored in 1978; the capitals belong to the Roman Period, and represent various types of animals.

Marina Corta

On the sides of the Lipari Port, at the foot of the Town Hall there are two bays: that of Marina Corta, and that of Marina Lunga. Marina Corta is peculiar for its churches’ disposition, which appear at the sea, and which become crowded with tourists, especially during the Easter Period to admire the wonderful Easter Procession. Marina Corta is a pleasant place for afternoon and evening walks, it is full of peculiar locations, restaurants, pubs, places for amusement for the young, where they can listen to live music and have a nice aperitif. The alleys are marvelous and particular, and with stone floor; narrow streets are framed by little balconies with wrought iron railings, and colorful plants. Walking down these streets means to be catapulted out of present. From Marina Corta you can easily reach the Port and Marina Lunga. Before arriving to the port it is necessary to go through the marvelous main street of Lipari. Women, fans of shopping, can found themselves in the “Toyland”. The shops are everywhere, so are the hospitable and polite shop-assistants. The main street is always busy, properly because of many shops and locations.

Saint Giuseppe Church

The Saint Giuseppe Church is an amazing building, dating back to the 17th century. For the fans of that period’s architecture, it is surely a necessary halt, being one of the most ancient buildings. It was built upon the crypt containing the relics of Saint Bartholomew, the protector of the Islands, and the patron of Lipari. The building appears at the adjacent beach, which peculiar position makes the building more attractive.

The Saint Bartholomew Cathedral

The Saint Bartholomew Cathedral is the most important building of the whole Aeolian Islands. It was built in the 16th century, and is situated in the central part of the island. The insides are spectacular, the paintings and the floral decorations are a vivid evidence and a precious heritage of the skill of that epoch’s artists.

The Canneto zone

The Canneto zone offers the possibility to enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. Its seashore is accurate in its every detail, and there are a lot of pubs and locations, ideal for afternoon and evening walks.

Belvedere of Quattrocchi

A usual stop for the tourists is the Belvedere of Quattrocchi, round 4 kilometers away from the center of Lipari. It is one of the most beautiful panoramic sites of the island; from its hill it seems to look at a great picture, a real time postcard with the shapes of the isles in the background, and Lipari in the foreground; the amazing stacks of Pietralunga and Petra Menalda, the high coast creeks, the Valle Mura beach, and the imposing Vulcano with its smoking peak.

Baths of San Calogero

Going down the asphalted street you arrive to Pianoconte, where thanks to signposts you can reach old baths of San Calogero, known for the excellent therapeutic properties of its springs. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the baths anymore, which are closed for years, but the walk will lead you to admire magnificent and marvelous views: the archeological excavation has brought to sight the rests of a Mycenaean Tholos ( a great stone building of round dome, consisting of overlapped lava blocks), and various basins for thermal baths, dating back to the Romans and to the Greeks.

Contrada Caolino

After Pianoconte it is possible to visit Contrada Caolino. The term’s etymology derives from the mineral’s name, extracted for the first time in Kaoling, a Chinese locality. It is a clay white rock, used in porcelain fabrication. The mine is abandoned now, but it is still a nice place to visit.

Once arrived at Scari , where the port is located, you immediately notice the charm of this island surrounded by the colors and flavors unique to this high cliffs broken by small jet-black sand beaches and caves, the white Mediterranean houses, the green palm trees, olive trees, citrus trees resting upon a harsh but fascinating volcanic cone in a sea of intense blue.

Leaving the port there is a road that leads directly into the town, this steep slope plunges into the green prickly pears, the caper plants, the colorful geraniums and bougainvilleas and typical shops where you can taste local delicacies, all that will accompany you until you get to Piazza San Vincenzo from which the Church takes its name. Facing the square there is the view out of the harbor and the beach of Scaria and the Strombolicchio, the oldest volcano of the Aoelian islands which stands like a fortress on the sea. From this square a horizontal climb leads to top of Stromboli, a path up to level 450 is very simple passing the traffic light in San Vincenzo up to 195 Prima Rina , all lined with vegetation consisting mainly of shrubs. The next section called Liscone is more challenging, the passage becomes rocky landslide, so you should have a guide accompany you, The effort for the two-hour walk will be repaid at some point when you are in a lunar landscape with craters where the continuous eruptions dominate the landscape. The trail continues up to the summit of Stromboli, following the path up to Pizzo and onward to Vancori. The landscape that promises to remain imprinted in your memory, you will be hanging over Ginostra, and on days with good visibility you can see the coast of Sicily, Mount Etna, the Strait of Messina and the Calabrian coast to Scalea.

Returning to the church of San Vincenzo along Via Vittorio Emanuele, you’ll be right in front of the house where Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, stayed during the filming of Stromboli Land of God in 1949, was their love nest, now remembered by a plaque. The road broken up into smaller roads that lead you to the sea, full of charm, leading to the church of St. Bartholomew, built in 1801, in front there is a statue of the saint .

Continuing from the church you can easily get Piscità, residential area known for its numerous coves and beach nestled between the ridges of black lava rock. The road leads up to a wide beach that marks the end of the urban and the beginning of the Sciara del Fuoco. One of the most fascinating experiences is during the sunset, the sun as it descends acquires a reddish color that illuminates the sky and then goes out on the water. At the end of Piscità there is a narrow and dusty but quite rich in Mediterranean vegetation, which leads to the observatory, now a restaurant (find transport with one ofthe classic “apette”), the place is just 100 m from the crater and at night you can comfortably enjoy your dinner while you can see explosion and lapilli, events that are repeated on average every 15/20 min. When travelling at night do not forget to bring a flashlight, the island is not lit and it allows you to see a carpet of stars as if you were out at sea.
