The ancient Phoenicusa, Filicudi, is named after ferns, a characteristic plant of this geographical area which grew up and still today grows up, plentiful and luxuriant, on the island. The history of the seven islands of the Aeolian archipelago has faraway roots. The first population units lived on Filicudi, such as on other six islands, since the Upper Neolithic, around 3,000 B.C. The excavations, rather recent, made in Capo Graziano locality, revealed twenty or so oval-shaped huts some of them has a “fishes’ bones” structure, situated on the promontory on the western slope of the mountain around 100m upon the sea level. It is clear, thanks to their particular structure, that these constructions were built in this way to better defend against frequent attacks, and violent forays, which occurred on the island. Inside the huts there were found: pieces of pottery of autochthonous production dating back to the Diana period, discovered on the southern coast of the port. Other pottery of the proto-Mycenaean style, found near to Capo Graziano village, allow us to understand the way the village continued to evolve until 1430 B.C., when it ceased to exist, probably because of a violent destruction. On the highest point of Capo Graziano there is the ancient sacrifice altar of these ancient populations. It seems Filicudi remained desert for some centuries because of the arrival of the “Ausones”, the population of the origins from the Apennines, later to be again populated during the Greek period. The traces of the Greek presence on the island are evidenced by the finding of a funerary inscription in Zucco Grande, and by the traces of an extraordinary Byzantine necropolis on the ridge of the port. Some of the marine wrecks, instead, date back to the Roman Age, can be sightseen today, and the ruins of the houses still today recognizable on the northern side of the port.

The history of Filicudi, such as for the whole archipelago develops into the sea, the source of support, work and innovation. The population’s vocation towards the sea, and the inescapable bond with it, formed in the course of millennia, marked the whole cultural panorama and the life’s style, even today, evident in local traditions. The need of support pushed, for millennia, the inhabitants towards the sea, the inexhaustible source of primary resource. Sailing the waters of the archipelago, which rapidly sink more than 2,000 metres, is an unforgettable experience which will totally please you. Sailing the Aeolians, without watching out for dangers which are there, may bring unpleasant surprises. Being of volcanic origin, the coasts, in numerous points, are surrounded by rocks and shallows near to the shore. Filicudi is principally formed by two elevations: Fossa delle Felci, 773m high, whose southern slopes are steep and uninhabited, while northern and eastern sides are cultivated and inhabited; another elevation is that of Capo Graziano, 174m high, connected with the other one by a flat isthmus, which from the sea makes the islands appear like two independent islands. The seabed around the island are very deep, except for the northern and the north-eastern part, where it is advisable to sail at proper distance because of the rocks.

Filicudi Porto

Coordinates: 38 ° 33 ’68 N 14 ° 35′, 00 E

Another point where to watch out is the one corresponding to the south-eastern point of Capo Graziano, where a shallow of 2,5 m makes the sailing very dangerous, especially in case of rough sea. On the north-eastern side it is possible to sail without any danger between La Canna and Filicudi, well-known for its rocks and its wonderful seabed which do not exceed 17 metres of depth. The adjacent port area of the Port of Filicudi seabed allow the mooring, even if you should watch out for underwater cables, and for meteorological conditions because this point is very exposed to winds of I quadrant and, partly to those of sirocco. To the north from Capo Graziano there is a creek where a pier made of concrete was built; it is 55m long and 12 m large, the depth in the header is of 9m and of 6m on the broads, it is equipped with bollards and fenders, permitting the mooring to small boats, and being a good shield against the winds of III quadrant, and mediocre with those of II and IV one. The most safe harbour against the winds of I quadrant is near the Beach of Le Punte, situated on the southernmost part of Capo Graziano. The frontal part of the pier is used only by ferries, the southern one to hydrofoils, while the northern one is used by pleasure crafts and by fishers’ boats, with the only condition not to hamper line means.

Pecorini a Mare

Coordinates: 38°33’,45 N 14°34’ E

The harbour area is equipped with gas station, slipway, crane, water valves, electric energy, and there are also the services of mooring, storage facilities, and garbage truck. Watch out for underwater breakwater, situated between the slipway and the wharf. The jetty of Pecorini, situated south of the mountainous principal complex in correspondence to the namesake hamlet, represents a good mooring point for the pleasure-boat owners, who can use a jetty 45m long, and 10 m large, with a seabed in extremity of 8m, and of 4-5m at sides. It is a good shield against the winds of I and IV, while it is completely exposed to those coming from the II and the III quadrant. The only provided services in the adjacent area are: a crane, boat storage, mooring and garbage truck.

The Aeolian Islands, seven pearls of the volcanic origin, are situated in wonderful waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, a few miles away from the Sicilian coast. The archipelago always attracted sailors and tourists all over the world, because of its unique landscapes, its historical evidence and its crystalline waters full of life, which seabed keep a tumultuous history made of eruptions, seaquakes, invasions and piracy. Despite the touristic vocation this destination developed in the last 50 years, these places, thanks to islanders’ love, maintained their pristine nature; they are an example and an evidence of a possible realization of a perfect coexistence between man and nature. The seabed is a wonderful view of particular colours: from the white of pumice to the black seabed of a volcanic origin. The coast is mostly rocky, full of creeks, stacks and coves. The waters are full of life, and characteristic species, the wrecks are witness of time and millennium history of these places full of beauty, charm and mythology. All these factors turned the Aeolians into a favourite destination for all the skin-divers. You cannot absolutely miss the scuba diving in Grotta dei Gamberi, in Secca dei Sei metri, and both charming and unique Archeosub di Capo Graziano area.

Cave of the Gamberi

The immersion, one of the most fascinating of the island, occurs near Capo Graziano, and starts with swimming towards the offing, and leaving behind Capo Graziano and a seabed covered with stones and Neptune Grass. Once reached the 15m of depth, a rocky wall goes down into the intense blue of the sea till twenty or so metres. Following the wall, while admiring the rich marine fauna, you will directly find yourselves at the entrance of the Grotta dei Gamberi. The entrance, of a distinctive “V” overturned shape, occurs at 37/39 m of depths where you enter a real dark, sinuous, and rather demanding tunnel. To enjoy the wonders of the cave it is not necessary to go much forward, because of a little light it should be quite difficult to proceed, and besides the first stretch is the richest concerning the marine flora and fauna, and particularly, of lobsters.

The shoal Sei Metri

While going back up, do not miss the gully, of a clear volcanic origin, leading to the surface; here you can admire big groupers, which populate the gully. The Secca dei Sei Metri, a favourite destination of skin-divers on Filicudi, has an evocative seabed, and is situated on the northern side of the island, off the coastal stretch between La Sciara and Giafante Rock, where a column, 35 m high, arises from depth to its header at the altitude of 6 metres. Moving from Filicudi Port and sailing in the northern direction you reach the suddetto rock; 200 m away from it you can see the shallow, the point marking the start of immersion. Going down along the wall, you can feel a unique sensation of flying which finishes only when you reach the sandy seabed, full of boulders; the place where it is not difficult to see morays, lobsters, red gorgonians’ shoals, sabella spallanzanii, and the characteristic melon sea urchin, breams, red Linnaeus and sponges of a bright yellow colour.

After having explored seabed with its extraordinary light plays, you can go back up admiring the numerous creeks, a perfect habitat for groupers and big blackbelly rosefishes. Surely the most charming immersion of the whole island, such as of the archaeological site of the world-wide importance because of numerous boats of ancient epoch lying on the seabed, is that of Capo Graziano. It is about a monolith of great proportions which rises from the depths in correspondence of the promontory of Capo Graziano in Filicudi. The scuba-diving starts from the head of the same shallow, and proceeds till the depth of 30m. During the descent you are catapulted in past, because you admire the archaeological findings of enormous values, an evidence of numerous shipwrecks occurred in course of millennia. Once reached 30m of depth, on a sandy seabed, there is the rest of a load of amphora of A-Rochi wreck. This area, besides being a site of a great cultural interest, is also a favourite place for those keen on nature, because of its rich and luxuriant habitat, thanks to laws, forbidding since 10 years fishing and scuba diving if not accompanied by authorized personnel, or whatever other activity causing damage to submarine environment.

Far from the most navigated routes, if you land on Filicudi, it is only for choice, or even better for the desire to immerge into a pristine and wild nature, where typical beaches, but also little and cosy coves, transform the island into a unique scenery. Undoubtedly, the sea is one of the principal attractions, and the principal support of the island. To fully enjoy all the beauties of Filicudi it is advised to use a boat, necessary to reach evocative glimpses, as Grotta del Bue Marino; in past it was thought to be the hiding place of marine monsters, because the rays of the sun created particular light plays. If you have no boat, do not worry; there are a lot of places where to hire it, or to make a guided tour along the coast. Another evocative corner hidden by the sea is La Canna rock, which according to the islanders is said to have the shape of Madonna with the child. This rock is shaped by sea and fire, and rises in all its might upon the island, giving impression to protect it. According to a “Filicudian” legend the rock has magic powers: it is enough to touch the rock to make your desires come true. The beaches are constituted of rounded pebbles; the most famous is that of “La Punta”, reachable from the pier on foot. As an alternative there are those of Pecorini sea and the Port’s beach.

The beach of  “Le Punte”

La Spiaggia is situated in the southernmost point of the island and is reachable on foot; it is enough to go along a picturesque path from Filicudi Port. It is about a beach covered with round pebbles of a clear volcanic origin, bathed by limpid, crystalline and blue sea, with a seabed which subsides a few metres away from the shore.

The beach of Pecorini

The beach of Pecorini is situated on the southern side of the island, in front of the typical fishers’ village of Pecorini a Mare. It is a stretch of black pebbles surrounded by a clear and deep sea, with traditional Aeolian houses in background. The beach has no bathing facilities, and is often occupied by colourful boats of fishers; it is one of the most picturesque glimpses of the island. It is about a beach situated on the southernmost point of the island, in the wide creek east of the Port of Filicudi. It is a beach of dark volcanic pebbles with a narrow shoreline, some hundreds of metres long which extends in parallel with the village’s promenade, easily reachable on foot.

The beach of Porto

The sea, where the beach del Porto arises, is blue; its seabed becomes rather deep, a few metres far away from the foreshore. The beach has no bathing facilities, but some steps farther, you can find traditional restaurants and a grocery shop.

The beach of Capo Graziano

The beach of Capo Graziano extends in the southernmost part, and is surely the most beautiful and typical of the whole island. Situated on the Capo Graziano promontory it is connected to the rest of the island by the strip of sand, 500m large, covered with rounded pebbles of volcanic origin, and surmounted by a little hill, where in past the namesake village, dating back to the Bronze Age, was situated. It is still visible thanks to the ruins of 25 huts. The sea, of an intense blue colour, which bathes the beach, breaks on the east upon enormous rocks, hiding evocative coves, to be discovered by boat. Besides all, the adjacent area, famous for innumerable findings, dating back to the Bronze Age, is considered one of the vastest areas of prehistoric settlement of the whole archipelago.

The Stack “La Canna” of Filicudi

To make the circumnavigation over the island surely is an experience that none visitor should miss. You will remain surprised by magic glimpses, and by beautiful landscapes which the evocative coastline reserves. Moving from the Port of Filicudi towards north, you will immediately notice a steep wall, representing according to geologists, the internal slope of a volcanic cone, almost corrupted by the erosive action of the sea. Looking up you will notice the village of Valdichiesa with its traditional white houses which harmonically contrast with the luxuriant vegetation. Once passed Valdichiesa you will find yourselves next to a beach, principally covered with pebbles where you can see a couple of houses, even if it is a very isolated zone: you have already arrived to Brigantini. The next stop is Zucco Grande, where the volcanic nature of the island is evident, thanks to its wall’s observation: it shows the stratification of lava scoria.

The next stop is Giafante rock, a very characteristic glimpse not only because of the shape reminding an ancient tower, but also because of its rocky coast. On the horizon you will notice the lighthouse of Punta Zotta, surrounded by little creeks and coves. Going forward for a little more than 1km, in the south-eastern direction, you will find yourselves near to La Canna, an imposing stack of basaltic rock, of the height of more than 70m, formed by magma solidification inside the carter, and thanks to the cone erosion of more soft consistence. This rock is shaped by sea and fire, and rises in all its might upon the island, giving impression to protect it. According to a “Filicudian” legend the rock has magic powers: it is enough to touch the rock to make your desires come true. At this point you can also observe Scoglio della Fortuna, and the amazing Arch of Punta Perciato, a lava promontory, where the erosive action of the sea opened a passage. In the southern direction you can see the famous Grotta del Bue Marino: in past it was thought to be the hiding place of marine monsters, even if it actually was the shelter of Mediterranean monk seal. Unfortunately today there are no these animals anymore, but it is worth the effort to visit this vista for wonderful plays of lights. The cave is 30m large, and thanks to the vault of 20m it allows the boats to enter it. Now only one step divides you from Costa dello Scairato, a bleak wall crossed by a gully where the crater of the Fossa delle Felci poured its lava scoria in past.

The cave of Bue Marino of Filicudi

Once passed the Sciara, it is the right moment to dive into green waters of Grotticelle di Punta Stimpaganto, one of the most beautiful points of the island where to swim. At this point the coast evolves into a little pier of Pecorini Sea, the place of a traditional fishers’ village, to mightily re-emerge then with a rocky formation called Filo di Lorani, till Le Punte Beach. Our tour finishes in Capo Graziano, the seat of a settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. In this stretch the coast is steep, inaccessible, and full of creeks. Watch out for a Shallow del Capo (-2,5m), famous for various shipwrecks in course of millennia. This site is also well-known for the institution of the archaeological underwater museum, which today constitutes one of the principal attractions of the island.

Filicudi, together with its sister Alicudi, is the most pristine and wild of the Aeolian Islands, a favourite destination for the lovers of nature still today pristine and full of amazing landscapes. From 1997 the island is declared, quite entirely, a natural protected preserve. The tourists fond of holidays in wild style increase every year on Filicudi because the island, with its 9,5 sq. km, offers various tours on foot. Recently various other paths were marked out; between them, of particular interest, the path leading to Fossa delle Felci, and that one of an evocative village, now abandoned, of Zucco Grande.

Monte Fossa delle Felci

The tour you should never miss is the ascent of Mount Fossa delle Felci, the already extinct volcano, whose height of 771 m represents the highest peak of the whole island. Moving from Filicudi Port you cross an ancient mule track paved in lava stone, where you can observe the amazing landscape of Capo Graziano leading to Valdichiesa locality, named so after the presence of Saint Stefano Church, whose construction was finished in 1897 upon the ruins of the old church. From this point, the traditional Aeolian houses, situated under the slopes of Mount Terrione, give an evocative view of the underlying coast. Going forward, in a few minutes, the path leads to a square near Liscio village, where a mule track leading to Fossa delle Felci forks; it is called so because in past it was covered with the namesake plant. Moving from the path you will find yourselves immerged into a nature such luxuriant and wild, principally compound of strawberry trees, heather bushes, and giant chestnut trees, which, in most luxuriant expanses, give the sensation of overwhelming. Suddenly, on the right, you will see a path, which in 20 minutes will lead you to the peak of Filicudi. Once reached the mount’s peak, in a few minutes, moving in the north-eastern direction, it is possible to reach a panoramic point, from where to enjoy beautiful landscapes of Alicudi Island and of imposing rock, La Canna, which with its 71m of height, arises as a guardian in order to protect the island.

Zucco Grande, Vallone Fontana e Case Ficcarisi

The visit of Zucco Grande village, more than an excursion, is a great walk to discover the north-eastern side of Filicudi. Moving from Valdichiesa, in around an hour, you will find yourselves in Zucco Grande village, an ancient prehistoric village, now abandoned, and overwhelmed by wild nature. In past this zone was populated by nearly 300 people, and thanks to some archaeological findings, it also was a favourite zone of Greek populations, which settled there. Between the ruins of the little village of Zucco Grande locality, almost quite totally covered with vegetation, there is a disquieting silence, broken only by ravens’ croaking and by the wind’s rustle, shaking the branches of trees. From Zucco Grande, a small path leads to Vallone Fontana, called so for the presence of a small spring of water, collocated inside the cave which creates a very evocative landscape glimpse; you can refresh yourselves after hours of long walks. From Zucco Grande location, another mule track forks and allows you to arrive to Case Ficcarisi where to admire a luxuriant vegetation, mostly composed of heather bushes, rockroses, strawberry trees, and wild roses. This locality is called after a little settlement which once was situated there. Moving a few steps you arrive to a panoramic view, from where to admire the complex of isles dominated by La Canna and Montenassarie, the lava gullies of Filo del Branco.

The Museum of Filicudi is one of the detached sections of Museum of Lipari. It was opened to public in 2003, but unveiled only in 2004. The structure is found in the Port of Filicudi. It is about the traditional Aeolian structure situated of two floors, arising upon the prehistoric village of Capo Graziano. The Museum has been divided into five exposition rooms, four of which situated on the first floor, and one on the ground floor. On the ground floor it is possible to sightsee ethno-anthropological findings, work tools, or those of everyday use. These objects were given to the Museum by the island’s inhabitants themselves who, together with the experts, have perfectly reconstructed the history of these findings, and therefore, of the island, too. Going up to the upper floor and entering the first exposition room, it is possible to read the chronological table of the island’s history, of its morphological changings, the aspects dealing with volcanology, the evolution of the island’s life, and also the relationship between man and environment.

In the second room there are the findings of the first period of the Bronze Age, the historical period, which lasted from the end of the third to the first part of the second millennium B.C., and the medium Bronze Age, the historical period lasted from the 14th till the beginning of the 13th century B.C. These finds were discovered thanks to the excavations of the villages Piano del Porto and Capo Graziano. The history shows that the Aeolian Islands underwent many dominations, or however, were visited by populations of cultures different from those of the typical western culture. The evidence can be found in the objects of pottery made of “African clay bearing little images”. The third room is dedicated to the marine archaeology. It is possible to admire ancient amphora of transport and stumps of anchor. One of the amphora dates back to the Punic period of the 5th century B.C., the others date back to the 4th B.C. , to the Greek-Italic period. Another group of amphora dates back to the 2nd B.C., and coming from the wreck A “Roghi”. The forth and the last room is still in set-up.

Beyond the emerged part, Capo Graziano keeps in its marine depths millennia of history, in way to allow the construction of an underwater museum, accessible only by the most expert scuba-divers, having the advanced patent. There are nine wrecks laying on the seabed of Capo Graziano because of the shipwrecks due to the shallow. There are different ways permitting scuba divers and those who are fond of culture to admire the wonders which the seabed keeps.

It is possible to go down until the maximum depth of 45m, the point where you can admire the wreck A, belonging to the Greek period, and dating back to the 2 century B.C. From the same point you can observe the wreck G, even today quite totally covered with sand, dating back to the 5th century B.C. More recent is, on the contrary, the wreck “Città di Milano”, i.e. “City of Milan”, dating back to 1919. It is about a Navy ship, whose wreck was caused by the violent explosion of the boilers, provoked by the impact with Capo’s shallow. Beyond the wrecks, on the seabed of Capo Graziano, it is possible to admire numerous amphora, vases and tools. One part of these archaeological findings is kept in Museum of Filicudi “Bernabo Brea”, divided into five exposition areas, and settled in the Port of Filicudi inside a typical Aeolian house. The visit starts with the Room I, which shows the historical and geological chronology of Filicudi, the evolution of man on the island, the volcanology and the relationship between man and environment. In the Room II there are archaeological findings, discovered thanks to excavations made in Capo Graziano and in Piano del Porto, dating back to the Bronze Age. There are also the fragments of Greek-Roman and African pottery, as an evidence of how, in past, the island was a favourite destination of different populations. The Room III is dedicated to marine archaeology with its exposition of amphora dating back to Punic wars, and those of the Greek-Roman period, and also those coming from the wreck A. Finally, in a large room, objects belonging to the Aeolian culture, are situated; it is about tools for fishing and work. Particular attention is given to the windmill for grain grinding, rebuilt and situated in the centre of the room.

As soon as you arrive to the Port of Filicudi, the place where the mooring is situated, you can immediately admire the wild fashion of the island. Our tour to discover the hidden beauties of Filicudi Island starts from the Port of Filicudi, situated on the south-eastern side, corresponding to the namesake plain. Certainly, this one is not the most amazing zone of the island, but it constitutes the neuralgic centre of all its economic activities, and the place where all the services of touristic support are situated. On the coastal stretch, near to the pier, it is possible to visit and to enjoy the beauty of a beach, big enough to relax and to fully enjoy the crystalline sea which caresses the foreshore. Going along the suitable for vehicles streets, which from the port connect all the villages, we reach Mount Guardia, one of the most fashionable zones of Filicudi, a unique point where you can observe evocative landscapes of the “six sisters” and of the Sicilian coast. North of Mount Guardia, a crossroads leads to Rocca di Ciauli, a little village where small typical island’s houses are situated along a steep slope, surrounded by bushes of bougainvillea, jasmine, and hibiscus.

Now, going along the suitable for vehicles street again, in northerly direction, in a few minutes you arrive to Liscio village, situated under the slopes of Mount Terrione. From this point you can admire a wonderful landscape, raising upon the promontory of Capo Graziano and other islands, except Alicudi, covered with Fossa delle Felci. Once this village was inhabited by the richest Filicudians, and the refined houses constitute the evidence of that fact. From Liscio village we proceed in northern direction towards Valdichiesa, named after the twentieth century church of Saint Stefano still existing. The houses making part of this village have the same characteristics typical of the Aeolian agrarian villages. From the square of Valdichiesa, in nearly 40 minutes, it is possible to go through a path leading to Mount Palmieri; the village, because of logistic difficulties impeding its restoration, is still intact with its traditional houses decorated with colonnade and wide terraces. Behind Valdichiesa, on the slopes of Fossa delle Felci, there is Serro village, where few houses form a little but characteristic agricultural settlement. Our next tour is to discover the ghost village of Zucco Grande, of Vallone Fontanella and Case Ficcarisi. The path, of the length of around 2km, forks from Valdichiesa in the north-eastern direction, to lead then to Zucco Grande, an ancient prehistoric village, by this time forsaken since about a hundred years because of a strong migration movement, and wild nature which overwhelmed it. Once this zone had about 300 inhabitants and, according to some archaeological findings, was also a favourite zone of the Greek populations which settled there. From Zucco Grande a small path leads to Vallone Fontanella, called so because of a small spring of water, collocated in a cave which creates a very evocative landscape glimpse; here it is possible to refresh yourselves after long walks. From Zucco Grande village another mule track forks and allows you to reach Case Ficcarisi where to admire a luxuriant vegetation mostly compound of heather bushes, rockroses, strawberry trees, and wild roses.

This locality is named after the once existed small settlement. Moving some steps you arrive to the panoramic point, where you can admire the complex of islands surmounted by La Canna and Montenassari, and by gullies of Filo del Branco. Besides, in Ficcarisi, if you are lucky, you can observe the colony of Eleonora’s Falcon, wonderful birds which dominate the gullies of Filo del Branco. Once having explored the eastern side of the island, we now move towards the south-western side of Filicudi, to discover Montagnola, Pecorini and Stimpagnato. From Piana del Porto, the only suitable for vehicles street quickly leads to Pecorini. It is possible to reach the church dating back to the 17th century, and the house-museum of Jaques Basler, where we can admire an ancient millstone made of stone, and numerous tools. From Upper Pecorini it is possible to admire the view of the little fishermen village of marine Pecorini, where a very busy beach covered with pebbles is situated. This is the favourite place for the sailors, who during the high season, stop to taste the aperitif enjoying the non-stop nightlife.
