Excursion of Great Crater – Vulcano

The island of Vulcano is named after the Roman god Vulcanus; its activity is in state of dormancy, but it is possible to observe some phenomena called “fumarole” , thermal and mud springs which attest its state of activity. In Roman mythology the island of Vulcano is considered the place where the Hephaestus workshops’, god of Fire, were situated. For those who cannot give up a naturalistic excursion, the visit of the Great Crater is a must. The path leading to the peak is situated about 5 minutes on foot from Levante harbour, the principal port of the island. The excursion is not demanding, it does not need particular equipment or preparation, and is suitable for everyone.

Advises:

In summer avoid climbs during the hottest hours; the temperatures can reach 40°C; the path, although is not demanding, has no shades.

Bring supplies of water with you.

It is recommended to put on comfortable shoes with socks, because sandy soil can be quite annoying.

The Path of the Great Crater

The access to the volcanoes, making part of the commune of Lipari, is bound to the payment of a little toll. In case of Vulcano the toll could be directly paid at the beginning of the path; near the ticket-office there is a small kiosk, good for those absent-minded who forgot to bring drinks. The path towards the peak is a pleasant walk of 45 minutes between brooms, volcanic boulders, and black and sandy soil, mostly compound of volcanic dust.

One of the principal reasons to reach the Great Crater is surely the view. As further you climb you can admire Alicudi, Filicudi, and Salina, but it is only when you reach the peak that you completely appreciate the charm of this archipelago. It will be possible to distinguish the shapes of all the seven isles and the peninsula of Vulcanello. The Great Crater of Vulcano is the only place where it is possible to admire the whole archipelago in a unique glance; turning around towards south, on the contrary, it is possible to admire the northern coast of Sicily, and Etna. Some of the most evocative photos of the archipelago derive from this place. Once reached the peak we move towards the discovery of the crater, a depression of wide dimensions of a diameter of around 500 meters. One of the particularities are the “fumarole”, the unique manifestations visible after the last eruption occurred in 1890.

The fumarole are mostly compound of sulphur, whose bacterial action is the cause of a yellow-ochre and red coloured patina, which covers the soil and the stones making part of it. While getting closer to them, be attentive; if you chose a guided tour, you will be asked to put on a supplied mask; on the contrary, bring a handkerchief with you, in order to put it upon your nose or mouth, because of sulphuric gas.

The descent occurs on the same path.

Filicudi, together with its sister Alicudi, is the most pristine and wild of the Aeolian Islands, a favourite destination for the lovers of nature still today pristine and full of amazing landscapes. From 1997 the island is declared, quite entirely, a natural protected preserve. The tourists fond of holidays in wild style increase every year on Filicudi because the island, with its 9,5 sq. km, offers various tours on foot. Recently various other paths were marked out; between them, of particular interest, the path leading to Fossa delle Felci, and that one of an evocative village, now abandoned, of Zucco Grande.

Monte Fossa delle Felci

Travel time: 90min

Difficulty: medium

The tour you should never miss is the ascent of Mount Fossa delle Felci, the already extinct volcano, whose height of 771 m represents the highest peak of the whole island. Moving from Filicudi Port you cross an ancient mule track paved in lava stone, where you can observe the amazing landscape of Capo Graziano leading to Valdichiesa locality, named so after the presence of Saint Stefano Church, whose construction was finished in 1897 upon the ruins of the old church. From this point, the traditional Aeolian houses, situated under the slopes of Mount Terrione, give an evocative view of the underlying coast. Going forward, in a few minutes, the path leads to a square near Liscio village, where a mule track leading to Fossa delle Felci forks; it is called so because in past it was covered with the namesake plant. Moving from the path you will find yourselves immerged into a nature such luxuriant and wild, principally compound of strawberry trees, heather bushes, and giant chestnut trees, which, in most luxuriant expanses, give the sensation of overwhelming. Suddenly, on the right, you will see a path, which in 20 minutes will lead you to the peak of Filicudi. Once reached the mount’s peak, in a few minutes, moving in the north-eastern direction, it is possible to reach a panoramic point, from where to enjoy beautiful landscapes of Alicudi Island and of imposing rock, La Canna, which with its 71m of height, arises as a guardian in order to protect the island.

Zucco Grande, Vallone Fontana e Case Ficcarisi

Travel time: 3 hours

Difficulty: medium

The visit of Zucco Grande village, more than an excursion, is a great walk to discover the north-eastern side of Filicudi. Moving from Valdichiesa, in around an hour, you will find yourselves in Zucco Grande village, an ancient prehistoric village, now abandoned, and overwhelmed by wild nature. In past this zone was populated by nearly 300 people, and thanks to some archaeological findings, it also was a favourite zone of Greek populations, which settled there. Between the ruins of the little village of Zucco Grande locality, almost quite totally covered with vegetation, there is a disquieting silence, broken only by ravens’ croaking and by the wind’s rustle, shaking the branches of trees. From Zucco Grande, a small path leads to Vallone Fontana, called so for the presence of a small spring of water, collocated inside the cave which creates a very evocative landscape glimpse; you can refresh yourselves after hours of long walks. From Zucco Grande location, another mule track forks and allows you to arrive to Case Ficcarisi where to admire a luxuriant vegetation, mostly composed of heather bushes, rockroses, strawberry trees, and wild roses. This locality is called after a little settlement which once was situated there. Moving a few steps you arrive to a panoramic view, from where to admire the complex of isles dominated by La Canna and Montenassarie, the lava gullies of Filo del Branco.

It is directed towards west and is surrounded only by the offing. The landscapes of Alicudi give full and strong colours, unique sensations which permit to come in a straight contact with nature. The port is the unique plain point, and is easily travelable. In order to visit the rest of the island it is necessary to climb hundreds of stairs. We remember that the mule tracks of Alicudi, even today, are crossed only by mules, unique means of transport suitable for the place. Passing through the San Bartolo Church you arrive to Sgurbio. Going beyond Sgurbio you reach Bazzina beach. Alicudi is a staircase over the sea. The islands of Filicudi and Alicudi are the obligatory stop for anyone who wants to discover those places where nature rules. In Alicudi it is possible to discover the beauty of smells and typically marine flavours; in fact, it is possible to hire a boat, in order to organize the nocturnal fishing of lesser yellowlegs. If fishing is profitable, you will have the privilege to eat fresh fish. After all, on the island as Alicudi fresh fish is a king of dishes!

One of the unforgettable experiences, for those who choose Alicudi as destination for their holidays, is the ascent of Filo dell’Arpa. It is about a mountain which rises up till 675m and constitutes the whole island of Alicudi. One of the best moments to face the climbing is before the dusk falls. Once reached the peak you can fully enjoy wonderful sunsets. The path leading towards the peak is not of the best; in fact it climbers up the mountain through a steep mule track made up of staircases of lava stone. It is recommended to put on suitable shoes, to bring a torch (fundamental because of total lack of illumination on the island) and a little stock of water.

The climbing starts in the suburb of San Bartolo, situated at the altitude of 350m and easily reachable from the port through a long staircase. The path crosses a first part of partially uncultivated land, to go on a more tough point (because of the presence of prickly pears or reed) towards the suburb of Piano Fucile, a place where is found the evidence of a prehistoric settlement belonging to the civility of Capo Graziano, dating back to the 16th B. C. Not far away from this site it is possible to visit the Timpone delle Femmine, a natural shelter used against the raids of corsairs and pirates. After this long walk the effort will be rewarded when, once reached the peak, you will enjoy the amazing view and wonderful sunsets, always different for lights and colours, wild nature that only Alicudi can offer.

The island of Vulcano is named by the Roman god Vulcanus; its activity is in a state of dormancy, but it is possible to observe some phenomena as fumaroles, thermal springs, and muds which prove its state of activity. In the Roman mythology the Vulcano island is considered a place where the forges of Hephaestus, the god of Fire were situated. For those who are not able to give up a naturalistic excursion, the visit to the Great Crater is a MUST. The path leading to the peak is situated at about 5 minutes on foot from Levante mooring, the main port of the island. The excursion is not demanding; it does not require particular equipment or preparation; and is suitable for anybody.

Some advices:

In summer avoid to climb during the hottest hours because the temperatures can reach 40°. The path, even being easy, has no shades. Bring a little supply of water with you.

It is recommended to put on comfortable shoes with socks; the sandy ground can provoke bother.

Concerning Vulcano the tax can be directly paid at the beginning of the path; close to the ticket office there is a small kiosk, useful for the absent-minded who forgot to bring any drink supplies with them.

Looking towards the south, instead , it is possible to admire the northern coast of Sicily ,and Etna; the most evocative images of the archipelago come from this place.

Once reached the peak, we move to discover the crater, the depression of vast dimensions of a diameter of about 500 metres. One of the details that catch your eyes are the fumaroles, unique visible manifestations after the last eruption, occurred in 1890. Fumaroles are generally composed of sulphur, whose bacteria action gives an ochre yellow and red patina to the ground, and to the stones which compound it. While drawing near to it, be careful: if you choose a guided visit you have to wear a mask, given as a supply; in the contrary case, bring a handkerchief with you, in order to put it on your nose and mouth in proximity of sulphuric gas.

The descent is to be done on the same track

The whole Aeolian coastal area has landscapes of an extraordinary beauty and uniqueness, but the sea of Panarea stands out for the presence of these islands: Basiluzzo, Bottaro, Dattilo, Lisca Bianca and Lisca Nera which, together with the island form a stand-alone archipelago situated upon the unique volcanic complex. The Panarea coasts, beyond being the demonstration of the powerful volcanic nature of the place, collect in a short stretch of sea several peculiarities which transform the discover of this small archipelago between Lipari and Stromboli into a continuous emotion, which vary from one island to another. Moving from the port in the southern direction, after having surpassed the promontory of Peppemaria and the village of Saint Pietro, you arrive to Drautto where the characteristic village is situated, extending along the coastal line. The Torrione Point, situated in front of Contrada Drautto divides from the Caletta di Zimmari a very beautiful half-moon shaped beach, mostly visited in August. The next stretch is that of the promontory Milazzese, rising with steep perpendicular walls upon the sea, where the ruins of the old prehistoric village arise. On the southern side of Milazzese Point a rocky coast forms a natural pool called Cala Junco, which according to many, represents the most beautiful and suggestive glimpse of the island. This point is perfect for diving into the wonderful waters of turquoise, indigo and intense blue colours. From the frontal beach an ancient path leads to Milazzese Point where you can admire the ruins of the 23 hubs of oval shape and one of quadrangular shape dating back to the Bronze Era. After the refreshing bath of Cala Junco go on towards the western side introduced by the rocky coast which tends to bitter the further you approach the western side. From the sea you understand that the island has two faces: the first one, corresponding to the village, is shaped by slight slopes which gradually go down towards the sea leaving space to plains and wonderful beaches; the second one, on the contrary, is harsh and wild full of gullies and undercoastal slopes which make it impossible to moor.

Panarea, despite its small dimensions, offers to those who like nature several possibilities of excursions both by boat, such as the visit of Basiluzzo, Bottaro, Lisca Bianca, Dattilo, and Lisca Nera, and those more strenuous to discover the hinterland and Punta del Corvo. The excursions into Panarea’s hinterland permit to discover the unknown meanders and to fully understand the evolution of the locality, once based principally on agriculture and sheep-farming, and then transformed thanks to the tourism into a glamour and elite destination. The attribution of such kind of notoriety is partially due to human activity which contributed to offer the growing number of services as a support of tourism, but especially to natural attractions of objective beauty and uniqueness. That is why we advise not to miss the visit of Panarea’s hinterland in order to discover natural attractions of the island. While passing across the old mule tracks, raising towards the pick of Punta del Corvo, you feel the strong atmosphere of the population which had to fight against wild nature and against the isolation with a little tools. The work of the ancient farmer’s civility is already tangible at distance, but only when you fully immerge into it, you understand the enormous work made to detract portions of soil from the mountain and use them for agriculture and for the construction of all the paths, canals and tanks, indispensable for that kind of activity.

The visit to the prehistoric village

Distance: 3km
Difficulty: easy
Duration: 1 hour

More than an excursion it is about a great walk to discover the southern side of the island. The archaeological site can be reached through the street which leads from the port to the overlying inhabited zone; then it turns to the left in Drautto direction, and continues towards Cala Junco. The path leading to the village shows wonderful glimpses; in the first part you cross the village of Drautto, a hundred of whitewashed houses spread over the coastal line, surmounted by enormous stairs once used for agricultural purpose. Once you leave the houses behind you, Cala degli Zimmari starts, where it is possible to dive into the wonderful waters which bathe it, and to relax on the soft black sand. At this point only a short distance divides you from the prehistoric village and from the magic Cala Junco. The settlement, dating back to the Bronze Age, is situated upon the promontory Milazzese, and is composed of 23 huts of oval shape, and 1 of quadrangular one, surely place of cult or reunion, where pottery, pots, millstones, and Mycenaean tools were found. It is not a case that the site is situated upon a plateau, extending towards the sea, protected by high walls which transform it into an ideal place for the defence. This fact makes us understand the anxiety towards pirates and intruders during that period. From this point an ancient path leads to Cala Junco, probably used in prehistoric times as a boat house; the bay making part of it is shaped as an amphitheatre, surrounded on its sides by extravagant rocky formations which gave birth to a natural pool. This cove is considered not only as the most beautiful bay of the island, but of the whole archipelago; the waters that bathe it assume extraordinary colours varying from emerald green to turquoise and to intense blue. During the summer period the cove is quite always crowded, but this is not an obstacle to enjoy the diving into fresh waters, and to lay and relax inside the real corner of paradise.

From San Pietro to Punta del Corvo

Difficulty: easy
Altitude difference: 420m
Time: 2.5 hours

The shortest path to reach Punta del Corvo is that leading from the Saint Pietro village to the peak. Follow the principal road from the port leading to the overlying village, and go further till you take the signed direction to the cemetery. Moving further from the cemetery the paved road becomes of clay, until it transforms into a mule track. The path is indicated with red and white paint upon the rocks near crossroads; pay particular attention to these signs. An error could considerably prolong the climbing. The route continues between the bleak vegetation, principally compound of shrubby plants, typical of the Mediterranean zone, myrtle trees and cypresses. Once reached a peak, marvellous landscapes with the view upon the archipelago are visible on the horizon, together with the view of the village and the western side covered with cliffs and canals, a perfect habitat for the nestling of Eleonora’s Falcon colony. Those who decide to continue the excursion are advised to come down on the southern side of Panarea near Cala Junco, and the prehistoric village of Punta Milazzese. Going down the road leading from the port to the underlying village you suddenly arrive to the crossroad; follow the road leading to the right in the northern direction, and you will quickly find yourselves in Contrada Ditella, where beyond the typical Aeolian village it is possible to visit the ancient Assumption Church. Once passed the church you reach thermal springs, and the harmless fumarole of the Calcara Beach. The beach situated in a basin, the probably remain of a collapsed volcano, shows an unusual landscape; fumarole’s gas soars from soil, making it warm, modifying its shades, and creating furrows in the earth.

The Calcara and Punta del Corvo

Difficulty: hard
Altitude difference: 420m
Duration: 3 hours

From this point restart the route, climbing towards the mount until you definitely leave the paved road, to move upon the harsh paths leading to the Punta del Corvo peak (421m). The route is quite difficult, that is why we advise a discreet athletic preparation, suitable shoes, water provision, and in case you want to enjoy amazing sunsets , a torch: the path, such as the rest of the whole island lacks public illumination. Once arrived to the peak, you can enjoy extraordinary landscapes with the view upon Basiluzzo , the Panarea village, and further upon the other islands. It constitutes a perfect evasion to escape the social life of the island and to immerge into the silent and harsh nature.

Panarea, together with isles and minor rocks, almost situated on the eastern side of the island, constitute a unique volcanic underwater complex. Between them Basiluzzo is the most charming, for two reasons: the first is to be found in its recent formation, which makes it one of the youngest craters of the Aeolians; the second ,in its dimensions which have permitted the agricultural use, or small settlements; situated at circa 2 miles to the north-east of Panarea, it extends upon the surface of 300 sq. m., representing the biggest uninhabited island of the Aeolian Islands. The volcanic origin of the place is already evident thanks to first observation of lava stratifications, which on the culminating point have reached the height of 169m upon the sea level. The island is principally constituted of rhyolite, a light-colour mineral which alternates with the black lucid colour of obsidian, and the white colour of pumice. The Basiluzzo formation dates back to 50,000 years ago, much more recent if compared to the near islands, and to Panarea, which formed between 150,000 and 300,000 years ago. The actual emerged portion of Basiluzzo is the remain of a volcanic neck, once much more extended, but now eroded by marine action and by bradyseismic phenomena, which create the soil’s lowering as the cause of emptying of magmatic chamber. The finds of Basiluzzo seem to confirm that the island, even if only for a simple visit, was frequented since the Neolithic Era; as a confirm of this thesis there are a lot of finds, amenable to the prehistoric village of Punta Milazzese in Panarea, on the southern side. Another important find, dating back to the Roman period, is that of a mosaic floor’s remains, and of coloured plasters, the remains of a villa probably built by a Roman owner, fallen in love with the place’s uniqueness. Adjacent to the villa they were found a covered barrel, used to gather waters, and a small boathouse, quite totally visible still today from 5m depth. Basiluzzo, during the last centuries, was frequented for an agricultural and a pasture purpose with its 3 hectares cultivated with cereals. This fact, at the end of the 17th century was the origin of a dispute between abusive farmers and the bishop of Lipari, the archipelago’s administer. Finally, in 1991, with the aim of preserving the ecosystem, an integral natural reserve, including all the other minor rocks, beyond the island, was established. On Basiluzzo there is only one natural landing on the very east point, from which an ancient path leads to an open space. Between the sharp rocks there are lush rosemary, and the lemons of the Aeolians. The flat part divided by dry walls, once used to grow the cereals, is today spontaneously invaded by heather, mastic, and common onion. Visiting Basiluzzo means to immerge into a unique atmosphere where the absolute silence is interrupted only by breaking of the waves against the coast, and by rustle of the wind. Once reached the peak it is possible to enjoy an amazing scenery of other rocks, and of Panarea; moreover, from this point you can fully appreciate the sharp morphology of this inhabited monolith. Basiluzzo continues giving emotions observing the coast, that is the reason why they advise those who have the possibility to totally circumnavigate it in order to observe the extraordinary coastal morphology, composed by small caves, high walls where lava stratifications and bizarre rocky formations, risen from the sea like monuments, are evident.

The second island has the first and the third peaks in extension of the whole archipelago; the territory is green even in summer thanks to its mounts’ action, which steal humidity from clouds giving it back to the soil. The climate, milder because of the sea’s action, even in winter period, is sunny , and the temperatures rarely go under 10°C. In spring the nature awakes from the winter’s sleep, which takes its train, leaving place to perfumes , intense colours and all the greens, turning out to be the ideal season to fully enjoy the sparkling nature. Beyond the note excursions to the Fossa delle Felci craters, to the Monte dei Porri, and the suggestive Brigantino path, various walks can be done on the island.

Mount Fossa delle Felci

Walking time: 2 hours circa.

Difficulty grade: medium.

The highest peak of the whole archipelago, called so because of the namesake lush plant, rises circa 968 meters high upon the sea level; that is why it is not rare to see it covered with snow during the winter period. Once reached the peak, a wonderful landscape appears on the horizon: Sicilian coasts dominated by Etna, Alicudi, Filicudi, Stromboli, Panarea, Lipari, and Vulcano constitute a frame for a sumptuousness of the crater, the real demonstration of the volcanic origin of the island. Various are the paths leading to the peak. The most recommended and the shortest one starts at Val di Chiesa fraction, reachable from every point by bus. The tour starts from the Madonna del Terzito Church, where the first stretch is characterized by lush vegetation, composed by heather bushes, chestnut forests, oaks, pines, and broom shrubs, in spring period, colouring the landscape with classic yellow flowers. Going on you will find yourselves upon the hill which separates Mount Rivi and Fossa delle Felci, from which you can admire the picturesque village of Malfa. The distance which separates you from the peak at this point is really short; you will at once notice the mightiness of the crater having a diameter of 600/700 meters, and of a hundred meters of depth. Only now you can fully understand the name of this mount; the crater is crossed by small paths, where you will find yourselves immerged, feeling nearly overwhelmed, by a stretch of ferns. You will be enchanted by this place, a crater circled by old trees, where a sensation of peace and quiet will invade your mind, making you feel like a part of this amazing gift, given us by nature.

Brigantino path

Walking time: 1 hour circa.

Difficulty grade: easy.

One of the most beautiful excursions of the island is surely that which twists for Nero Valley, which after having passed Paolonoce locality, finishes near Vallone d’Ogliastro, through the Brigantino path. Leaving from the village of Lingua, easily reachable by bus, and after having passed the lake in the south-western direction you will arrive to Sicily Street. Going beyond the last houses of the street, you will arrive to the crossroads where the path once started. On your left you will notice a small beach, where it is possible to swim before a lush vegetation overwhelms you; it is mainly composed of: wild violet, asparagus, tamarisk, aromatic absinthe, arisaro comune, and broom. Once passed the first part, the path narrows going along the mule track, circled by olive trees, capers bushes, and aromatic herbs, enveloping you with their contrasting perfumes. Once seen a small isolated cabin in the south-western direction you will have to cross a wisely terraced part, an evidence of a great work made by the inhabitants, to make rough but fertile soil cultivable. The house of Paolonoce, before visible only in the distance, now is behind the corner, surrounded by a well maintained garden of citrus, olive trees, and vines; from the terrace you can see an amazing view towards Panarea, Lipari, and Vulcano. The house, having a small kitchen, is always opened, and is used as a shelter for wayfarers, who can record their passage by signing the attendance book. The zone is immerged into a surreal silence, only broken by the wind’s swish, which breaks against the trees’ tops, and by the screech of the falcons flying over the ditch.
